How to Use ALTERED STATE
Updated this week

Introduction

ALTERED STATE is a generative AI tool that allows you to create and texture 3D models from simple text or image prompts. In this guide, we’ll walk you through the basics of how to use ALTERED STATE and the different features it has to offer.

Step 1: Signing up

Head to https://www.alteredstate.app/. Click through the introduction and then sign up using your preferred option.

For more information about FuturePass, check out the FuturePass website or our Getting Started with FuturePass guide.

Step 2: Signing in

Navigate to https://alteredstate.app and sign in.

You’ll then be prompted to create your ALTERED STATE profile.

ℹ️ Note: Each ALTERED STATE account receives 200 free credits (subject to change at any time), which are replenished weekly.

Step 3: Prompting

You’ll notice the option to select the type of model you want to generate: standard or avatar.

The Avatar Creation feature generates humanoid characters in T-pose, that are primed to be auto-rigged.

The Standard Creation is better for all your other 3D model-generating needs.

Once you’re set on the model type you’d like to generate, you can prompt with either text or by uploading an image. Select your preferred method and continue.

ℹ️ Note: If prompting with an image, it must fit the following criteria:

  • Maximum 20MB file size.

  • Minimum resolution of 256x256 pixels.

  • Formats: jpeg, .jpg, .png and .webp.

Here are some tips for optimizing your prompts:

  1. Tips for Text Prompts: The more detailed and specific you are when describing your object, the closer the generated result will align with your imagination. Think about the key features, shapes, materials, textures, and colors that define your vision. Including these details helps ALTERED STATE better understand and recreate your idea, ensuring a more accurate representation.

  2. Tips for Image Prompts:

    1. Upload a Clear, Full Image: Start by uploading as clear an image as possible, ideally full-bodies with no cut-offs, and with a clean, low detail background. This allows ALTERED STATE to focus on the primary subject without distractions, leading to more accurate and refined results. ALTERED STATE will automatically remove the background from your image.

    2. Re-texture: Provide a clear image of the new texture you want applied. The more precise you are, the better ALTERED STATE can understand and execute your vision.

  3. Start Simple: Begin with simpler designs or concepts. This allows you to gradually learn how to utilise ALTERED STATE to achieve your own creative style. As you become more familiar with the tool, you can introduce more complex ideas.

  4. Experiment and Explore: Don’t be afraid to try different approaches or experiment with new ideas. ALTERED STATE is designed to work with a variety of inputs, so exploring different creative avenues can lead to unexpected and innovative outcomes.

  5. Iterate and Refine: Creativity often involves multiple drafts. Use ALTERED STATE to generate initial ideas and then refine those ideas through multiple iterations, guiding the model to align more closely with your vision.

  6. Be Patient: Like any process, it will take time for you to understand how best to utilise ALTERED STATE to bring your creative vision to life. Patience and consistent use will lead a to progressively better experience as we learn from the results and continue improving the model.

ℹ️ Note: We’re committed to maintaining high standards in the content ALTERED STATE creates. ALTERED STATE has been trained on open source and licensed content and so you will notice that ALTERED STATE won’t accurately create things that may be owned by others. We also moderate the images and text descriptions you enter and will stop any creation that may be inappropriate and against good-taste.

Step 4: Generating

When ready, click ‘Generate’. This process may take a few minutes.

Step 5: Selecting Your Model

Four versions of your prompt will be generated on the left-side panel. In the right panel, you can view your model's name, polycount, and vertices. Select your preferred model and continue.

These three box icons represent the following from left to right:

  • mesh topology view

  • untextured mesh view

  • textured mesh view

Step 6: Texturing

You can create your texture with a new image or use your original prompt. This process may take a few minutes.

When texturing is complete, you’ll see your texture options in the panel on the right. You’ll also have the option to view your prompt, rename your texture, or delete it altogether. If you are satisfied with one of your textures, select it and continue.

Step 7: 3D Rigging

3D Rigging is for humanoid characters you wish to be game-ready, this will involve making adjustments to your character's chin, neck, shoulders, wrists, spine base & ankles. Here’s a before and after:

Once placed in the appropriate spots you’ll be able to test the accuracy of your markers by generating the following animations:

Once the animation is generated, please give it up to a few minutes to process.

Step 8: Sharing

If you’re proud of your creation and want to share it with the world, you can click the ‘Share’ button on this toolbar and you’ll receive a direct link to it to be shared as you please.

Step 9: Publishing

ℹ️ Note: The publishing function is not currently active just yet, but will be released in an upcoming update.

If you wish, you can publish your creation by clicking the ‘Publish’ button.

Publishing your creation:

  1. Mints your creation to The Root Network using our NFI (Non-Fungible Intelligence) pallet, providing your creation with both an intelligence framework and UBF metadata for interoperability.

  2. Adds it to the community explore page.

  3. Allows your creation to be bought, traded, sold and authenticated in supported games and experiences.

Step 10: Exporting

To export your object, click the ‘Export’ button on the toolbar at the bottom of your screen. Exporting is currently supported in .glb, .obj, .usdz & .fbx.

You can also choose to include “LODs,” which stands for "Level of Detail,” which refers to the degree of geometric complexity within a 3D model.

ℹ️ Note: All filetypes + LODs are supported for unrigged assets. Rigged assets are only supported in .glb currently, but we plan to expand on this in a future update.

Congratulations! You now know how to use ALTERED STATE!
